Professional Biography
Dr Alastair Carruthers is a cosmetic dermatologic surgeon who operates his own clinical practice (Carruthers Dermatology Centre Inc.) in Vancouver, BC and is Clinical Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He received his medical degree from Brasenose College, Oxford (UK) in 1969, did his dermatology residency at St. John's Hospital for Diseases of the Skin in London and completed his graduate studies in dermatologic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (USA) in 1982.

During his 30 years of practice, Dr. Carruthers has made several major contributions to the field of dermatology.  Foremost among these is the use of BOTOX® for cosmetic applications, a discovery he made with his wife, Dr. Jean Carruthers, in 1987. He has also worked extensively on the problem of facial lipoatrophy associated with HIV infection. He has over 100 peer-reviewed articles to his credit and has authored numerous text books and book chapters.  He is a member of the Canadian Dermatology Association, where he served as President from 1998 to 1999.   In addition, he was President of the Canadian Society for Dermatologic Surgery(1997-8) and has just finished serving his term as President of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery(2006-7).  Heis a member of the American Dermatological Association.
