Quick Tips for Great Learning Objectives

Why write obectives?

Objectives are tools used to:

  • Help you and/or your planning committee identify a common goal or goals
  • Indicate clearly to your audience what they may expect; and
  • Evaluate the activity.

They are also a requirement for CPD accreditation by the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada.

What is an objective?

It is often a short sentence that begins with an action verb and informs the participants as specifically as possible what they will learn.

A Learning Objective example could be:

 

At the end of this activity the participant will be able to prescribe antibiotics.

Is this relevant to your target audience?  Can you be more specific?  An improvement might be:

At the end of this activity the participant be better able to prescribe the latest antibiotics used in cases of skin infection.

Choosing the appropriate verb

The follow are examples of verbs that can be used to write learning objectives and are classified according to different levels of performance:
