Quick Tips for Great Powerpoints

Print Version

  • Keep it simple.  Use only the essential information on the slide and verbalize the details.  The best text slides have no more than a title and 3 to 5 bulleted or numbered points per slide.  If you can keep your points focused to one core idea or concept this is best.

  • Use as few words as possible – no more than 40 words per slide.

  • Use large type.  The heading could be as large as 48 point; the body might be 24 to 36 point.

  • Underlines, boxes and shadows will help to accent key points.

  • Use capital letters in the headlines only.  It is easier for the eye to read upper and lower case lettering in the body copy.

  • Use the same style or pattern for all slides so they look like one, cohesive presentation.

  • When preparing slides, use colour carefully.  A dark background color works best, with white lettering to contrast.  One or two other colours might be used to highlight important elements.  Avoid deep blue as a highlight colour – it is not readable at a distance on a black background.

  • Allow for some blank space; don’t fill the entire slide with details or pictures.

  • In regard to visual aid, consider these helpful guidelines.  If you are trying to show the following, use the following:
  • Proportions, trends of rank, use a graph

  • Relations or processes, use a diagram

  • Person, location or story, use a photograph

  • Comparison or organizing, use a chart
  • Visual aids support the presentation; do not add them as the entire presentation – be prepared to add visual commentary to the visual aid.

  • Use pictures to get your idea across.  They are easier to remember, less distracting and have more impact.  Have stories ready and use imagery to set the backdrop.  They can dramatically help you connect with your audience.

  • Avoid complicated charts and graphs, they are hard for the audience to follow.  Keep visual ideas very simple.
