Professional Biography
Dr. Jason Rivers is a dermatologist who practises at Vancouver's Skin Care Centre opposite Vancouver General Hospital. He is a professor of dermatology at the University of British Columbia and director of the dermatology residency program.

Dr. Rivers specializes in the areas of skin cancer, hair loss and transplantation, as well as laser and cosmetic treatments.

His most significant contribution has been in the area of skin cancer research and prevention programs. Dr. Rivers worked with the Skin and Cancer Unit at New York University, followed by several years with the Sydney Melanoma Unit in Australia. He then returned to Canada and served as head of the Canadian Dermatology Association's National Sun Awareness and Skin Cancer Prevention Program for seven years.

The skin cancer prevention campaigns, which reached millions of Canadians each year through the media and educational materials distributed, involved working side by side with groups such as the Canadian Cancer Society and the BC Ministry of Health.

Dr. Rivers was co-principal investigator of a $300,000 study on the sun protection habits of Canadians. He presented a report to the House of Commons Hearing Committee on the Environment (effects of ozone depletion on human skin) and was involved in a forum to create the UV Index.

To date, Dr. Rivers has published 135 papers on skin cancer treatment and prevention, hair transplantation, laser treatments and skin revitalization.

As director of the dermatology residency program, Dr. Rivers is involved in teaching and mentoring dermatology residents.

Over the years, he has given many presentations to a diverse range of groups from health professionals to community health volunteers.
