c) Partnerships for Health System Improvement: 2010-2011
Partnerships for Health System Improvement (PHSI) aims to strengthen Canada's healthcare system through collaborative, applied and policy-relevant research. PHSI is Canada's premier health services and policy research competition — and with its strong emphasis on partnerships and knowledge translation it is also a major resource for managers and policy makers who want relevant research to inform their decision-making. PHSI funds teams of decision makers and researchers to conduct applied health services and policy research. Because they participate throughout the research process the research results are more likely to be relevant to and used by decision makers.
The maximum amount awarded by CIHR for a single grant is $400,000 for up to three years (partnership contributions are in addition to the CIHR amount). The equipment amount, where applicable, is awarded in year one.
Application deadline: November 1, 2010
Funding start date: April 1, 2011
For questions about this initiative and research objectives contact Andrea Smith, Manager, PHSI and Evidence on Tap, at 613-941-0805 or by email at andrea.smith@cihr-irsc.gc.ca
d) Other: Network Catalyst Grant
The Knowledge Translation Branch intends to launch a Network Catalyst funding opportunity in August 2010. The objective of this funding opportunity will be to support the creation and/or further development of formal networks by encouraging national and/or international collaboration, resource sharing, capacity building and dissemination in priority research areas.
The maximum amount awarded for a single grant will be $200,000 per annum for up to three years.
Anticipated deadlines:
Application deadline: November 15, 2010
Funding start date: June 1, 2011

The Global Health Research Casebook
To consolidate lessons and experiences gained through applied global health research partnerships, the Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI) is inviting Case examples to contribute to a Global Health Research Casebook. This Casebook will present concrete examples of how Canadian-LMIC research partnerships have operationalized efforts to reduce health inequities across a range of themes. This requires a context-specific understanding of the social, economic and political factors that determine people’s health, not only through their interactions with the health system and other sectors, but also through their access to a range of resources and opportunities.
This Casebook aims to highlight practical, relevant and transferable lessons by encouraging focused reflection among global health research practitioners on emerging trends, insights and important advances in addressing root causes of health disparities, the different effects of policy interventions, and viable alternatives with the overall aim of improving equity. Cases will provide concrete examples of the value of global health research towards improving health and health systems to share with research and policy communities and civil society.
Please visit www.ghri.ca for more information and the abstract submission form.

Grantscraft Webinars to be offered for CIHR’s Integrated Knowledge Translation Funding Opportunities
Integrated knowledge translation (iKT) is an approach to doing research whereby stakeholders or potential knowledge users are engaged in the entire research process. Whether you are a first-time applicant or resubmitting a proposal, CIHR will be offering a series of information webinars intended to provide general information about our iKT programs (i.e. objectives, eligibility, application process, etc). In addition to this overview, participants will gain insight into the review process and those elements that can strengthen an integrated KT project proposal.
A session will be offered for each integrated KT funding opportunity (Knowledge to Action, Synthesis, Partnerships for Health System Improvement). These sessions will take place the week of August 30-September 3, with specific dates and times to come
